Folge 7: Die Manipulation der Massen

Die Propaganda ist das effektivste Werkzeug der Nationalsozialisten. Mit ihrer Hilfe sollen die Massen vereinnahmt und gesteuert werden. Joseph Goebbels, Reichsminister für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda, treibt sie in den Jahren der NS-Herrschaft zu einer nie da gewesenen Perfektion. Vom einfachen Schulbuch bis zur großinszenierten Massenveranstaltung, folgt alles einem großangelegten Masterplan. Im noch neuen Medium Film vereinnahmt das Regime Schauspieler und Kreative für ihre Zwecke und schafft Bilder, die bis heute nichts von ihrer manipulativen Macht eingebüßt haben. Was in Deutschland ab der Machtübernahme 1933 praktiziert wird, kommt mit dem Anschluss 1938 auch in der nunmehrigen Ostmark zu Anwendung. Folge 7 beschreibt die Funktionsweise und die Werkzeuge der perfekt geschmierten Propagandamaschinerie des nationalsozialistischen Terrorregimes. Gustav Ucicky, einer der führenden Regisseure der NS-Zeit, verantwortet damals zentrale Werke der NS-Spielfilmpropaganda. In seinem Film "Heimkehr", übernimmt der österreichische Schauspielstar Paula Wessely die Hauptrolle. Die Aufgabe der Fotografen Albert Hilscher und Heinrich Hoffmann ist es, das Regime in den Augen der Menschen fotographisch in das rechte Licht zu rücken.

Episode 7: Manipulating the Masses

Propaganda is the Nazis’ most effective tool. It is used to co-opt and control the masses. Joseph Goebbels, Reich Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, refined it to unprecedented perfection during the years of Nazi rule. From simple school textbooks to large-scale mass rallies, everything follows a grand master plan. In the still-new medium of film, the regime co-opted actors and creative professionals for its own purposes, creating images that have lost none of their manipulative power to this day. What was practiced in Germany following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933 was also applied in the newly annexed Ostmark after the Anschluss in 1938.Episode 7 describes the inner workings and tools of the well-oiled propaganda machine of the Nazi regime of terror. Gustav Ucicky, one of the leading directors of the Nazi era, was responsible for key works of Nazi feature film propaganda at the time. In his film *Heimkehr* (*Homecoming*), Austrian film star Paula Wessely plays the lead role. The task of photographers Albert Hilscher and Heinrich Hoffmann is to photographically present the regime in a favorable light in the eyes of the public.
